Each tour is conducted by a fully-trained and friendly volunteer. Tours start at 10.30am at the entrance to Central Arcade on Grey Street, near Grey's Monument, and finish on Newcastle Quayside. Tours last approximately 90 minutes. How The Other Half Lived This walk explores Newcastle’s historic Quayside area where the poor lived and worked in squalid and unsanitary conditions. You will hear stories about gross overcrowding, grinding poverty, poor houses and a soup kitchen. Meet at the Guildhall and finish at Swan House roundabout.  Grey’s Monument Tour Climb the 164 steps to the top of Grey's Monument on a tour with Newcastle City Guides. Tickets are for half-hour slots between 10am and 3.30pm. Pre-booking is essential.   Railways and Riverside Discover how early railways, industries and bridges have been joined by modern art and find out just what the Glasshouse Gateshead’s car park was originally used for. Meet at the west door of The Glasshouse Music Centre (facing St Mary's & Tyne Bridge) and finish at the Gateshead end of Swing Bridge.  All tickets are available on our website. Walk-ups are accepted on the day, all we ask is you arrive half an hour before the start of the walk.
