Beautiful Recitation (Tilawat): Reciting the Quran involves lengthening vowels and using a beautiful, rhythmic tone (Tajweed). Because a woman's singing or reciting voice is naturally attractive, scholars agree she should not recite the Quran or sing nasheeds out loud in front of non-Mahram men. The Adhan and Prayers: For the same reason, women do not call the Adhan (call to prayer) out loud for men, nor do they lead mixed congregations in prayer. In Private: A woman is free to recite the Quran as beautifully and loudly as she wants in the privacy of her home, or when she is exclusively around other women or her Mahrams (like her husband, father, or brother).
