@newscientist: Do you have a smell that instantly takes you back to your childhood?   That sudden rush is due to the so-called Proust Effect - the phenomenon in which a scent automatically triggers a highly emotional, autobiographical memory from our past. One reason that it's so powerful is that smell, unlike many other senses, travels along a "superhighway" to brain regions involved in memory and emotion. Scientists think that certain scents are often tied to childhood memories because the first time we encounter them, they are flagged as important by the brain, helping cement them in long-term storage.   In this episode of Change Your Mind, Helen Thomson shares her most powerful smell memory, and with the help of olfactory expert Michael Leon, discovers why training your sense of smell might help preserve your memory later in life.   To listen to the full episode, follow the link in our bio.

For me it's heavy car fumes. It reminds me of going on holiday to the Philipines since there was so much cars while I was walking on the streets of Manila. But it always makes me smile because the thought takes me back to all the good times I had there when I was a child :)

I have a smell that is very Autumn. It brings back memories of making Halloween masks in arts and crafts class at around 9 years of age. There is no one trigger. It could be walking home from school smelling home fires burning. Most homes don't have open fires anymore. It brings back memories of our local fish and chip shop because we had power cuts in the 70s and if lucky we got a chippy rather than cooking food

I contracted herpes after being intimate with my new boyfriend for the first time. Before we had sex, he never mentioned that he was living with the virus, so I had no idea I was at risk. A few days later, I became extremely sick and experienced painful symptoms that lasted for about two weeks. It was one of the most difficult experiences I’ve ever gone through. After I confronted him, he admitted that he had known about his herpes diagnosis for years but chose not to tell me beforehand. I felt completely betrayed because I believe I deserved the opportunity to make an informed decision about my own health. If he had been honest with me from the beginning, I could have asked questions, taken precautions, or decided whether I was comfortable with the risk. Instead, that choice was taken away from me. I decided to end the relationship because trust is very important to me. However, he keeps telling me that I’m overreacting and that herpes is common, so it shouldn’t be a big deal. I understand that many people live normal lives with herpes, but I still feel that honesty and informed consent are essential in any relationship. Am I wrong for feeling this way, or was I justified in expecting him to be truthful before we became intimate? Am cured now by @DR ITUA MIRACLE MEDICINE 🌿💯 🥰🥰🌿🌿🍀🍀💯💯💯❤❤❤🙏🙏🤩❤🌿🥰🥰🥰❤🍀🙏🙏🙏🤩🥰🥰
