Henry VIII bends toward Prince Edward, the son he waited years to have. Edward is placed at the center, surrounded by attention, flowers, attendants, and royal hope. But there are three future monarchs in this room. The kneeling young woman is probably Mary. And the little red-haired girl at the far left is Elizabeth. Henry’s back is turned directly toward her. Stone painted this imagined scene in 1871, so his audience already knew the irony. Edward would rule for six years. Mary would rule for five. Elizabeth, the overlooked child beside the empty chair, would rule for forty-five. The room gives Edward affection and certainty. Elizabeth receives distance and a book. Sometimes the child a family overlooks becomes the one history remembers.
