let's not forget that this final was worth 80% of their grade. before eliminating the midterm, the midterm and final were each 40%. two snapshots; 80% of the grade. all of the class participation/practice/learning mean NOTHING if one bad day can your entire grade. even if you did learn, if the professor only cares about a single grade, and not about the semesters worth of learning, give him a grade,.with or without the learning.

Yeah, I reckon you hit the nail on the head: students are not incentivised to learn, but to get a good grade, which logically means they'll eventually (have to) forego learning to get better grades. These results seem like a good example of that in practice, and it seems like were at a point where the system must change to reincentivise learning again

the take home midterm vs final to ai correlation is a reach. this thing where students practically got higher scores in take home assignments vs in-class final has always been a thing way before gen AI blew up

I think we need to assign the appropriate responsibility to professors who use AI to grade. An AI graded assignment is the biggest incentive to use AI on an that assignment. A live professor has the ability to weigh and value aspects of a rubric appropriately. A TA using AI to grade 100 essays, doesn't. Of course a student would use AI to get the AI answer.

that last point is the most important point in the video. the bigger issue that is at the root of the issue of students being incentivized to use ai is that there is a perception amongst students that education is a zero sum game and that they will be left behind if other students are doing better than them

I’m back at college as a 30 year old and I’m constantly bombarded about how AI is required for jobs and I need to know how to use it while my professors talk about how we shouldn’t use it or slot in ways to use it that honestly don’t make sense. It’s frustrating and overwhelming and is overshadowing a lot of the enjoyment I’ve had being back in school.

The way learning is evaluated has been outdated for a while now. Test-taking has always been its own narrow skill which can be exploited and provides little value in the real world. Does the way we think about testing now become useless in this age of AI? Or maybe apprenticeships prove to be a more useful way to practice learning in context.

Ok, while I don't doubt they are using AI; this is one of the most bias and misleading video I've seen today. Take home midterm vs final; well, finals are usually more comprehensive and more difficult. That's not the most important thing though, if it's take home then it's open book meaning they should be higher grades. If you are unsure of answers you can check, and for a midterm most will check even if they are sure. So we should at least include a before AI what kind of discrepancy there was, what were the grade differences; even if it still wouldn't be accurate at least as at it wouldn't be completely one sided and bias.

Professors need to be careful that they don’t assign so much work that genai is the only way to get it done. This happened in my engineering coursework with solutions manuals (and inherited homework/tests). I’m worried ai could supercharge this
