Water bears (tardigrades) are microscopic eight-legged invertebrates that live in water (typically in thin films of water surrounding plants, soil, and sediments). . Tardigrades are often described as “indestructible” or “immortal”, but the reality is that tardigrades are mortal like any other animal. What makes them unique is their ability to enter a reversible state of suspended animation (cryptobiosis). They enter this state when the environment in which they live dehydrates. When this happens, tardigrades shrink into a dehydrated form known as a “tun” and their metabolic activity drops to nearly undetectable levels. . It is this physiological adaptation (cryptobiosis) that allows them to withstand extreme desiccation, temperature fluctuations, and other environmental stressors. When water becomes available again, they rehydrate and resume normal biological activity. . In this video you can see different places where you can find these amazingly cute microscopic creatures. For example, moss and lichen are among the best places to find them because moss and lichen absorb and retain moisture, creating ideal microenvironments where tardigrades can feed on algae, plant cells, and microorganisms. Leaf litter also traps humidity and supports microbial growth, providing both water and food for water bears. Ponds, swamps, and other water environments are also good places to find tardigrades. . For this video I used an Olympus CX31 microscope at up to 400x magnification. #microscope #microscopy #tardigrades #EduTok #TikTokLearningCampaign
