Most people do not understand that ART IS HARD!😭 It takes work, time, and experience to really make great art. Its not this mumbo jumbo magic. Art is a craft

I really like this Mary Oliver quote from her poetry handbook:
"Everyone knows that poets are born and not made in school. This is true also of painters, sculptors, and musicians. Something that is essential can’t be taught; it can only be given, or earned, or formulated in a manner too mysterious to be picked apart and re-designed for the next person.
Still, painters, sculptors, and musicians require a lively acquaintance with the history of their particular field and with past as well as current theories and techniques. And the same is true of poets. Whatever can’t be taught, there is a great deal that can, and must, be learned."

I think this is why Andy Weir is so successful and refreshing, having a sci fi author who actually knows what they’re talking about is a pretty unique perspective

Ive always felt that authors who claim reading books "taint" their inspiration and takes away from its originality fail to realize that the same could be applied to movies/shows. So if reading somehow takes away your originality when writing, then watching movies would too, and I guarantee that all these authors watch movies quite regularly.

As the original creator, i take back my statement. When I made that video i was referring to high school education; however, the way I went about that was horrible. My whole take was meant to be about how majority of high school academics is memorization. But after rewatching the video it’s clear that I wasn’t being very clear on that and was belittling higher levels of academics and education overall. That was truly an error on my part and I see how dumb I sound

i think it’s more about “the academic world has rejected me so i reject it while still allowing myself expression and ego”. not saying it’s right, just saying it’s covering for something more real.

Yup. Same thing with art styles. Learning fundamentals is what makes you learn shortcuts that eventually become your art style.

I understand and agree with the core message. But I also think it’s important to acknowledge that the tools of criticism and analysis are different than the tools of creation. A good artist needs to be able to engage with the tools of analysis in the editing and refinement stage. But so often editors and critics make terrible artist because they’re trying to reverse engineer creativity from deconstruction and it comes out trite and formulaic or overly theoretical. I think most artists who shun things like “themes” and “motifs” do so because those things come from the toolset of analysis. Even music theory is at best a tool of refinement not creation. But lives firmly in the world of understanding a thing that already exists. Not generating a new thing. If you talk to successful artists who are critical of overly formalised “literacy” about their process and methodology very few of them will talk about just winging it they just have approaches that live more firmly in the world of manipulating the creative process with an intuitive eye developed over years of study. Often overly engaging in analytical tools *is* at odds with producing good work. That doesn’t mean they’re winging it or illiterate. I’m firmly in the camp that adjectives and nouns (theme, motif, structure) are reductive analytical tools, creativity is verbs how to *do*. Now to make a full sentence you need both. But art driven by an overly analytical approach is often static and unmoving in multiple senses of the words.

I'm an artist that went to art school and I can tell you that not all artists thrive under the same conditions. Some people did well using specific techniques or through inspiration from other artists. Some, me included, needed to find their way through experimentation. It wasn't for clout, my brain just didn't do well under the constraint of trying to express through structure. I tried many times and my most successful work was always when I flowed with the inspiration in the moment. I'm not into pretentious takes that people that do work well under structure are less creative though. I think that's what you're picking up on rather than the actual practice of the artist being inherently wrong.

ive never tried to put themes in my writing, and yet reading my own writing i find hella themes, the themes are the point and if you got none you got no story just events being told in sequence

Read the book, Connections written by James Burke. He show’s over and over that creativity comes from the interaction of individuals and ideas.
