Do a little internet research to find a case my boss just prosecuted against Jerome Norman and Mary Hall in Pike County, KY (also Appalachia). One of the 3 children in the home was kept locked in a bedroom with little to no food. No access to a bathroom. Taunted by both of the guardians/the defendants. The boy was sent from the local hospital to Univ of KY Medical Center. Doctors there said he had a heart attack due to the malnourishment. Each of these defendants got 15 years to serve. Unfortunately that little boy will never psychologically get over this trauma.

HONESTLY, I'm sure ppl knew but were minding their own business like you're supposed to!!💯 The girls had boyfriends and phones/social media accounts.... Obviously they left the house and they say the family went to Dollar General every night together....

Someone had to know something. How can a person hide 16 kids out for that long? I think people knew something was going on and just didn’t care enough to say anything and now these children are the ones suffering from this. It’s sad.

Imagine being showed on the daily that we're living in a world where women and children aren't centered. Imagine knowing that if we would simply center our women and children we could have significantly happier, healthier, and more productive communities and choosing to do nothing to improve the systems/institutions that created these cases in the first place. Imagine choosing to purposefully set up generations of women and children to fail, and then only turning around to punish them.

Coming from a teacher — many times someone does notice, but the kids still aren’t protected and it’s heartbreaking because your hands being tied where you can’t save them.

a friend of mine worked for CPS for 15 years in WV. She quit a few years back because the cases they "shrugged off". She couldn't take seeing kids being abused and the state know and do NOTHING!! WV seems to not care about children and animals. Its really sad.

Sadly it’s happening in my area and there is nothing that I can do about it! I try but I can’t get no help for these kids!

I grew up between Barboursville and Salt Rock WV. I was I believe 4th grade at Martha Elementary and found out about a family with 7 kids living in the woods in an abandoned house with no power or running water in the middle of the winter. I only recall people in the area taking them food and clothing and blankets. Don’t remember any state agency ever being involved. They were there maybe 6 months and never knew anything further.
