@romania: Can beauty make you uneasy? Peleș Castle crouches in Sinaia like an aristocratic hallucination beneath the Bucegi Mountains. Tourists photograph the turrets, filigreed timber and immaculate gardens. But grandeur is a gifted liar. Coins bearing King Carol I’s image were placed beneath the building during construction, metallic effigies entombed under royal splendour. The king died here in 1914. A crown was reportedly kept near his bed. Even sleep, apparently, shared the room with duty. Peleș was a technological anomaly, electrified early and fitted with central heating and a central vacuum system. Its Hall of Honour hides a retractable stained-glass roof. Roughly 160 rooms unravel through Florentine austerity, Moorish delirium and Turkish ornament, as though Europe had been shaken in a velvet sack and spilled across the Carpathians. Walnut devours light. Weapons glower from walls. Silk and armour coexist without apology. Subtlety never reached Sinaia. Perhaps castles are humanity’s most expensive quarrel with oblivion. We stack stone, hoard swords and smother walls in beauty, hoping death might feel underdressed and leave. It never does. Kings evaporate. Footsteps become dust. Peleș remains, watching us pass with cameras raised like secular prayers. Maybe we don’t visit to see how royalty lived. Maybe we come to understand how thoroughly they disappeared.
