@craigwillard: Some managers don't manage the work. They manage the appearance of the work. #highperformer #mindset #craigwillard #highperformancemindset #highperformers #HighPerformerOS #fyp
It’s not a leader’s job to be subject matter experts.

I hire people that are smarter than me. I have the right people in the chair because I don't need to compete.

I lead people that I 100% couldn’t do their job, I want them to be able to replace me. My goal is to make myself irrelevant . I’m not even kidding, my main priority is to build my leaders and highlight their accomplishments.

A good manager won’t know how to do your job, they’ll act as a facilitator to ensure you have the time and resources to do the work, and as a filter to keep the unnecessary noise away so you can get the work done. It requires trust that you know what you’re doing and the ability to hold back outside pressures.

Hiring “managers” that have no idea what they are managing, it’s like hiring a shepherds who doesn’t have a clue about sheeps.

I haven't had a boss be able to do my job for 25 years. most of that time my income has been higher than theirs. I'm an engineer. I think this is common in technical fields.

A manager is responsible for _ensuring_ job gets done, not for doing it. In a long term: ensuring that all foreseeable jobs are done and we have spare capacity for unforeseen ones. That’s completely different competency from doing a job.

You started off weird. I’m a CEO I can’t do most people’s jobs in my business - that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. I’m not sure you should be giving people this kind of advice.

Humility is key to success. The manager needs to acknowledge his lack of technical skill but the tech needs to acknowledge his lack of management ability. People skills pay more because they are rare

Leaderships skills aren’t about being a subject matter expert at everything your employees do, it’s knowing how to manage/leverage personalities, talent, and skills.

Terrible take. Yes there are terrible managers. There are also excellent managers who also cannot do your job. Being a great leader doesn’t mean also being a sales person, just like a great salesperson, rarely makes a good manager. Apples and oranges my friend.

Not all managers can be experts in the fields they’re managing. That doesn’t make them bad managers.

The quicker you learn a Leader and Manager should not be used synonymously and are not the same roles, the easier work becomes. some people are great managers (things - process) and Leaders (people). Learn how to leverage each to their strengths for your benefit.

Yea man, we manage people not work, micromanaging is terrible and we want everyone to know our employees do their specialized skill better than us. If I was a better volleyball coach than my volleyball coach, I made a terrible hire lol

This is very dependant on feild and scope of team. As a technical manager, I have expert level in the work some of my team members are doing. For others I have only a basic level. My job is to listen, clear barriers, and help them get it done. Regardless of whether or not I know how to do it.
