Sometimes it’s the little things that make me smile the most. Today, Sterling, our 13-year-old male lion, found the perfect scratching tool, a tiny stick! Watching a lion weighing hundreds of kilograms carefully rub and scratch his face against something so small is a reminder that even the kings of the animal kingdom have their quirky moments. Scratching is an important natural behaviour for lions. It helps them remove loose fur, relieve itchy skin, and can even help spread scent from glands around their face. In the wild, lions often use trees, branches, rocks, and other objects to groom themselves and leave their scent behind. Sterling has been part of the Felidae family for many years, and moments like these allow us to appreciate not only his power and beauty but also his unique personality.
