@shabooki_sunshine: What if elections are actually the least democratic part of democracy? Sortition would replace career politicians with ordinary citizens selected through a jury-duty-style public lottery, creating a miniature version of the country instead of choosing from the tiny fraction of people wealthy, connected, and charismatic enough to win an election. Ancient Athens used it. Aristotle associated it with democracy. But would randomly selected representatives be less corrupt—or merely vulnerable to entirely new forms of manipulation? Be honest: Would you trust 500 randomly selected Americans more than Congress? #Sortition #Democracy #PoliticalScience #PoliticsExplained #PoliticalTheory #Civics #AncientAthens #GovernmentReform
what if any political advertising and campaigns or even media presence were illegal. instead all advertising is handled by a centered official organisation, representing the parties equally, with a database on their info. or the political advertising can be limited to a budget

Hi, fellow PhD in political science here. The solution is accountability and power division. Easy example, instead of electing a central government, the country split into clusters of 1000 neighbors. Apply the pseudo-random election. And this person must live and respond to their neighbors.

Democracy is not about choosing your leaders, it’s about being able to get rid of them in a non violent way

Ngl, i think that ppl who belives in democracy, to a degree r kinda stupid (cant wait to the comments lol), in my head, ove always thought that it should be "what causes the least harm", sure, u should be able to vote, but i dont belive everyone should have the ability to be voted for, some politics are inherently harmfull, and activly cause suffering, and i domt see the reason why tf those are votable choices

The electoral college and the idea of one central leader heavily skews democracy in this country. The idea that you don’t even have to win the popular vote to become president is stupid. And even if you win the popular vote the idea that half the nation could vote for one thing and half the nation for another and yet one politician will control the whole executive branch.

I like the idea of something like an 70:30 split between elected representatives and citizens appointed by sortition. The randomly selected citizens could be sequestered so that any communication directed at them from other parliamentarians would be on the public record. The idea is that the party that forms government may still need to form a coalition with regular citizens in order to pass legislation. A government with a particularly strong majority may not need the votes, but the citizen vote still acts as a kind of anchor because the will of the people always remains in plain view. Citizen legislators could also be given access to legal teams that could help them draft their own bills during their short terms in office.

dosent really make sense to me. firstly for one limited term, you cant expect someone to drop their job to be a politician for a bit and then never return. but mainly, you need the politicians, to actually e familoar with politics and the way to run things. you cant replace the entire knowledge base every time. would be catastrophic for foreign relations for example

The obsession over having to elect your leaders is absurd. High performing civil servants should be given the opportunity to serve in legislative or executive positions within city/regional/provincial governments for limited terms and be allowed to work their way up to national government positions based on track record.

Lowkey the legislative branch of the government shouldn't be in the government but in the people. All laws are decided by the people, the government only has the job to actually make said laws happen
