That's the story of Keachi, a tiny community in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, that once held one of the state's most respected schools for young women. The Baptist Union Female College opened its doors in 1858, and by the time the Civil War began, it had 125 students studying inside its halls. But when the Battle of Mansfield erupted just miles away in 1864, everything changed overnight. The college's second floor was converted into a Confederate field hospital and morgue, and wounded soldiers were carried in by the dozens. Today, roughly one hundred of those soldiers still rest in Keachi's Confederate Cemetery, cared for by local heritage groups more than a century and a half later. As if that weren't enough drama for one small town, a cyclone tore through Keachi in 1880, badly damaging the college and injuring its own president.
