@sineadbovell: We may be the last generation that reads. Reading does more than give us information. It develops cognitive agency: the ability to follow a complex argument, hold competing ideas in mind, distinguish truth from persuasion, and arrive at an interpretation of our own. But almost everything about the modern information environment is being engineered to remove that effort. Information arrives summarized, visualized, headlined, and increasingly interpreted by artificial intelligence. That is why I worry about what I call the Great Cognitive Divide: a future in which some people deliberately preserve the ability to think deeply, while others gradually relinquish more of that work to technology. The more complex the world becomes, the more important the facilities we can develop through reading also become.

Reading trains you how you critically think and a lot of people/children are going to lose that skill. I recommend people read two books at one time to keep the hobby fresh

👏👏👏 This may sound weird maybe not, but I’ve recently made reading a physical book for 30 minutes and journaling for 10-15 minutes a daily practice (both away from my phone or computer). It’s calmed and focused my mind in ways that meditation never did.

Not only this, originally dies. There is an agenda to get people to accept TLDR. If anything I read more AND combine short form to be a better translator. Thinking is the last art

My nephews are 14 and 16 and their summer assignments are to read a book and give me a book report. They will earn $25 for every book read and report done to go towards back to school shopping.

I’m a writer/journalist— nobody reads anything. Signs, directions, menus, newspapers, books, etc. people simply do not use their brains at all anymore.

It’s mostly the fact that capitalism has us all in such an unbreakable chokehold. I would love to devote hours a day to sit and read, but without a village- I’m a single mom doing everything at all times. I know I’m not the only person going through the trenches.
