Following his eventual extradition from Chile, Fujimori faced trials for human rights abuses. In 2009, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was found guilty of ordering a military death squad, known as the "Grupo Colina," to carry out the Barrios Altos (1991) and La Cantuta (1992) massacres. These operations occurred during the government's fight against the Shining Path insurgency.
