Pale pastels always come out white and the 80s were nothing if not pale pastels.

White was acceptable for a wedding until recently. It became popular about the time bridezillas became a thing.

I am 69. The etiquette rule when I was growing up was nothing that looked like a wedding dress. Somewhere along the way it seems to have morphed into no white, no cream, no ivory, and absurdly no floral or pattern with a white background.

My grandmother told me it was rude to wear black to a wedding bc black was the color or mourning. She said light pastel colors only.

It wasn’t a thing back then. In fact, it was more frowned upon to wear black to a day wedding, but no one was dictating guest attire

I’m a boomer. The only thing I ever heard was no black. My mom’s 5 bridesmaids were in white satin with lavender cummerbunds. I think it’s an insecurity problem for those who have a problem with it

The photography was worse so it's possible depending on the lighting that the pastel dresses just kind of washed out.

I’m thinking that the dresses were some shade of pink or pastel colors that just ended up being very white in the photos somehow?

I agree those dresses are white . And I love that your Mom was so unconcerned like the unbothered queen that she didn’t even notice it

Both my mom and my (now ex) MIL wore ivory to my wedding in 1990. Never gave it a second thought, as there was no way you could confuse them as the bride.

My grandma wore a white suit to my wedding in 1995. I honestly didn’t think a thing about it until many years later someone looked at my pictures and made a comment about it. It’s not like anyone was going to think my grandma was the bride. I really don’t think it was as big of a deal back then.

Married in 1997 - there were no dress codes for weddings then. I don’t remember anyone saying anything about wearing white to a wedding. People wore white to my wedding, and I didn’t care. Everyone knew I was the bride. 😂

In 98 when I got married it didn’t matter. My stepmother and my mom wore white/off white. It was a non issue. Who cares.

My mom, married 1972, told me a while back nobody talked about stuff like that, not in the middle class anyway…there wasn’t anyone telling them what to do

People wore white at my 1988 wedding including my mom. I didn’t think anything of it.

wedding dresses weren't even traditionally white among middle class Americans until after WWII. everything surrounding the rabid attitude around wearing white at a wedding is extremely modern

As a bride in ‘99 I didn’t care what everyone wore as long as they were there to celebrate us 🤷🏻‍♀️. I don’t remember it ever being a rule back then. Now I need to go through my wedding album to see, lol.

I got married in the 80s and would never have worn white to a wedding but my mom was strict on etiquette like no white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day.

back then, women didn't feel outshined by a flippin colour. They knew the day was about them and a basic white dress on a guest can't outshine them. people these days are way to self absorbed and insecure.

My mom was raised it was ok to wear, but the dress shouldn't compete or outshine the bride or cause someone to question who the bride is. The rule was Sunday best for weddings. She is from a rural area, if that makes a difference. We know exactly who is the bride and who is not in this picture
