The park is located in Yamanouchi, a small mountain town in Nagano Prefecture, famous for its traditional onsen (hot springs). It’s actually home to places like Shibu Onsen, where you can walk through the streets in a yukata and hop between different public baths, such a unique, old-Japan vibe. Getting to the Snow Monkey Park is already an experience in itself. About a 30 minute walk through a snowy forest, surrounded by tall, magical trees. It honestly feels like stepping into another world. At the end of the trail, there’s an entrance fee (¥800 per adult). That’s where you enter the area where the monkeys live freely. And this is the highlight : the monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring. The water is geothermally heated (rich in minerals, including sulfur), and they just chill there like it’s a spa day. They run around, play, fight a little, and yes, there were SO many babies when I went. They’re not aggressive at all as long as you respect their space. Just observe, don’t touch.
