@clearerthanthiswithada: Just a reflection of how I’ve changed after living in the US for a little over ten years. There are also a ton of good changes but these are some of the most pervasive #America #ImmigrantExperience #Nigerian #Storytime #personalgrowth
in colonial Africa the europeans didn’t allow the natives to participant in leadership so race wasn’t an issue for them. in America the doors are open to you but the whites are constantly putting up roadblocks. having the prize in sight yet out of reach because of racism create a kind of unique american paranoia.

When Africans say “race was never an issue or thing” prior to moving to the states, it doesn’t mean you don’t consider yourself to be a black person. Coming from a country/ continent where you’re the majority, you don’t identify by your race, but rather nationality and/ethnicity. In the US, everything is about race.

Welcome to America. This is literally the entire existence for us Black American women. I’m sorry that this happened. All of the black diaspora needs to stick together.

I moved to America when I was 24 and I had never had a panic attack before that. That says a lot.

Emotional repression is why people are sick. Bottled-up emotions can increase the risk of mental health problems, chronic stress, heart disease, digestive issues, sleep problems, and chronic pain. Beware!

Growing up in Michigan there is a COMPLETE difference in black Michigan be white Michigan. We are direct, to the point vocal, outspoken with each other and the white ppl in our spaces. But in the burbs that doesn’t exist and you’re expected to play the game. Understand exactly what you mean

I appreciate your take on this topic. as a Black American our experience is so unique and the reason we separate ourselves from everyone else. being black in America takes such a major toll on our mental health that we unfortunately feel the need to disconnect from anyone that hasn't had that experience because you can't explain it. you have to experience it.

This is such a good way explaining this perspective. Especially the stress of feeling like you’re under achieving, it’s hard to articulate when you start feeling that way bc you don’t realize life is having that effect on you until your neck deep in it.
