HURRICANE ISAIAS UPDATE: SERIOUS THREAT TO THE GULF COAST Hurricane Isaias is a powerful Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph and higher gusts. The storm is moving north-northeast at 16 mph and is expected to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast this evening. Hurricane-force winds and dangerous conditions are expected to continue into early Saturday. Current Warnings and Watches A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from the Jefferson/Plaquemines Parish line in Louisiana to west of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and from the Bay/Gulf County line in Florida east to the Aucilla River. A Storm Surge Watch is in effect from the Suwannee River to Yankeetown, Florida. Storm Surge and Coastal Flooding Dangerous storm surge could cause significant coastal flooding. Water levels could rise 6 to 9 feet above ground between the Alabama-Florida state line and Grayton Beach, Florida. Other areas along the Gulf Coast could experience storm surge ranging from 2 to 7 feet, depending on location. The greatest danger will be along the immediate coastline, where rising water and large waves could threaten lives and property. Follow evacuation orders and instructions from local officials immediately if they apply to your area. Wind Threat Tropical storm conditions are beginning in some warning areas. Hurricane-force winds are expected along the coast this evening and into early Saturday. These winds could reach as far as 100 miles inland into southern Alabama. Heavy Rain and Flooding Isaias is expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, Florida’s Big Bend region, and southwestern Georgia. Some locations could receive up to 15 inches. Other parts of the Southeast could see 2 to 5 inches of rain, with isolated amounts reaching 10 inches. Flash flooding, urban flooding, and river flooding are possible, with significant impacts expected in parts of southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southwestern Georgia. Never drive through flooded roads. Tornado Threat The risk of tornadoes will begin this afternoon and continue tonight across coastal Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and southern Georgia. The threat could continue Saturday across parts of eastern Alabama, Georgia, the Florida Panhandle, and the Carolinas. Dangerous Beach Conditions Large swells, dangerous surf, and rip currents are expected along parts of the Gulf Coast. Stay out of the water and follow local beach advisories. What You Need to Do Stay informed through your local National Weather Service office and emergency management officials. Secure outdoor items, prepare for possible power outages, and have a way to receive weather alerts. If you live in a flood-prone or evacuation area, take warnings seriously and be prepared to move to safety. Please take this storm seriously. Even after the hurricane makes landfall and begins to weaken, dangerous winds, heavy rain, flooding, and possible tornadoes can continue well inland. Stay alert and put your safety first. #fyp #america #hurricane #dangerzone #alabama
