Lab-grown salmon has officially hit restaurant menus….heres the most important thing to know! A company called Wildtype has received FDA approval to sell its lab-grown salmon in restaurants, where it’s being labeled as “cultivated salmon.” In this video, I’ve included a screenshot of a real restaurant menu currently serving it, so be sure to save this post for reference if you want to know what to look for. Right now, this isn’t widely available. It’s currently being served at only a handful of restaurants, including one very popular high-end restaurant in Washington, D.C. that I’ve personally eaten at. Had it been served as part of my meal, I would have had no idea I was eating lab-grown salmon. Personally, I believe we deserve clear, transparent labeling. Whether someone chooses to eat lab-grown seafood or not is entirely their decision…but people should have the information they need to make that choice. I personally would not choose to eat it!! The USDA does require bioengineered foods to be labeled, but the lack of meaningful enforcement around these products raises a lot of questions for me. The deeper I dive into the world of lab-grown meat and seafood, the more surprised I am that this isn’t being talked about more. I’ll continue following these developments, sharing what I find, and keeping you updated. If you know someone who would want to know this, please share this post with them so they are aware!
