@irisbucketlist: At first glance, it's just a lion carved into a rock. But once you know the story, it becomes one of the most moving places in Switzerland. 🦁🇨🇭 The Lion Monument was carved to honor the Swiss Guards who were killed while defending King Louis XVI and his family during the French Revolution in 1792. Rather than abandon their duty, many stayed behind knowing they likely wouldn't survive. The wounded lion, with a broken spear and a shield bearing the Swiss cross, symbolizes their courage, loyalty, and sacrifice. It's no surprise that Mark Twain described it as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." 📍Located in Lucerne, it's free to visit and only a short walk from the Old Town. Take a few extra minutes here—not just for the photo, but to read the inscription and reflect on the story behind it. Have you ever visited a place that meant so much more once you learned its history? #creatorsearchinsights #imswitzerland #switzerland #switzerlandtravel #bucketlist

I went to it some time ago on a Sunday morning. A tour bus of Japanese tourists pulled up. The got out took pictures and were gone within ten minutes. An odd experience. A very moving monument
