How do they know the day length is changed and not that some other variable impacted growth conditions to impede or enhance growth? Like atmospheric light differences or the development of a better food source etc?

coral are so cool, most of them have a symbiotic relationship with algae in their skin that let them get food from photosynthesis. The fact that they need light to live has caused them to evolve florescent pigments to filter the light that passes through their skin to optimize their photosynthesis.
