Unlike many countries, you can't always buy a SIM from a small roadside shop if you're a foreign visitor. The easiest and most reliable option is to visit a main Zong or Ufone office in a major city, where staff can register your SIM using your passport and visa. It usually only takes a few minutes. A local SIM isn't just useful for maps, ride-hailing apps, and staying in touch. In some smaller towns and sensitive areas, the local police may ask to contact you or coordinate your travel. During my trip, both my hotel and the police insisted that I have a working local Pakistani phone number before continuing. Having a local SIM made it much possible to communicate with them and avoid unnecessary delays. If you're planning a trip to Pakistan, don't leave getting a SIM until you're in a remote town like I did. Pick one up in a major city from an official Zong or Ufone service centre, and you'll save yourself a lot of hassle later.
