Mrs John Polidori :
people are too focussed on the fidelity of the film, and not on intertexuality, which makes an adaptation good

I really enjoyed the adaptation of Emma with Anya Taylor Joy! Although they skipped out on some parts of the book, it didn’t take away from the meaning, and made the plot understandable even to those who have not read it. Also, it’s just filmed beautifully, and I loved the costume design.

i’m a big fan of the 2019 version of Little Women! it’s pretty similar to the book with only a few changes, and it’s one of the most realistic portrayals of sisters/sisterhood that i’ve ever seen

I’m usually one of those people who absolutely hates adaptations because I feel like they never quite catch the essence of the book. But I really enjoyed Little Women, Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro), and Anna Karenina (with Keira Knightley). I reckon the Like Water for Chocolate series is brilliant too. Oh, and Coppola's The Outsiders is a proper classic! (sorry for my english)

By the way, how do you manage reading so many different texts at the time? It's quite an impressive skill

The Haunting of Hill House adaptation by Mike Flanagan is an extremely lose interpretation of the original story, but I think it’s so much better. He takes what is a great book and turns it into a work of art. It’s scary, it’s beautiful, it’s tragic, it’s funny, and overall it’s a perfect story of love, family, grief, and fear. I don’t think there’s a better piece of media than Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House.

I love Clueless (the loose adaptation of Emma) and Not a classic novel, but my favorite movie adaptations are Perks of being a wallflower (best peice of literature ever)

I don’t love the 90’s adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. I believe the actors’ age gaps are pretty off in comparison to Austen’s description of the characters in the novel. You should watch the BBC miniseries from 2009 and share your thoughts on it! I think it’s a much more faithful adaptation but would love to hear what you think.

The latest Frankenstein was really good but I also loved Viktor and The Creature from Penny Dreadful. Older adaptation like The Glass Menagerie or anything by Tennessee Williams. I re-read it more than rewatched it but Princess Bride is really good. In France, the latest Comte de Monte Cristo by Dumas (ive only seen scenes because I want to read it before I watch this one) is really good! The LoTR trilogy obviously and I really don’t know why I’m commenting when I’ve written two master theses on Movie adaptations (one being Dances with Wolves) and I basically live & breathe for them (thus me reading the Iliad & the Odyssey right now)

I really loved what I saw of Crime and Punishment adaptation (2007, it's on YouTube). It is one of my favorite books, and I felt as everything I had imagined while reading it, was stunningly pictured. I could tell which scene was each, I could read Raskolniknov's intentions and unspoken concerns by the acting, really well projected and very important too, for a book in which you are rumbling and consumed by the character's constants thoughts almost all the time, a battle between conscience and soul, what to say, what to not! Good video! I have to read Sense and Sensibility. 🫶🏼

The first that comes through my mind when I hear the word adaptation is Forrest Gump, cause of how good it is. It definitely different from each other some ways, but it’s one of those rear situations when you could say movie beat the book, in my opinion.

i really enjoyed the count of monte cristo 2002 and the north and south mini series! both took some artistic liberties but enjoyable on their own right and made me want to read the original book

im also reading the odyssey for the first time since high school (and also rewatching bbc pride and prejudice) and i think with adaptations and reimaginations the essence matters more than the accuracy. if i can feel like the central heart is there i dont care as abt embellishments or even cutting small things

I had to write an essay about that while studying Shakespeare. I recommend the book "Adaptations and Appropiations" by Julie Sanders. Personally, a good adaptation has to have something new from the director otherwise of it ain't broken, don't fix it.

I really like the latest The Great Gatsby adaptation, it's faithful but also with a nice own touch of the director. I've been wanting to see the one with Mia Farrow, but I haven't found it ):
