This blew up over on Instagram. You cannot turn off what you were trained never to turn off. Military aviation requires sustained operational readiness that is neurologically distinct from ordinary alertness. After sufficient training and operational exposure, this state becomes the nervous system’s default. The brain stops asking whether readiness is needed. It simply remains ready. That is the design. In the context it was built for, it is exactly right. The cost appears in the spaces where readiness is not the requirement. At home, where nothing is a threat but the system is still scanning for one. In relationships, where hypervigilance reads as controlling, or distant, or emotionally unavailable. In the body, where years of elevated cortisol and disrupted sleep leave a physiological residue that does not resolve just because the operational tempo slows. Military aviators often describe a specific discomfort with genuine stillness. Not boredom. A deeper unease. The sense that quiet means something has been missed. That is not a character flaw. That is a nervous system that was asked to run at a very high level for a very long time and was never shown how to come down. Understanding this does not mean accepting it as permanent. The nervous system trained into readiness can be worked with. But only by someone who understands what they are actually working with. Save this if it named something you have been living with and could not explain. #militaryaviation #militarypilot #aviationmentalhealth #theaviationtherapist #veteranpilot
