It's waaaaaay shadier and deeper, in a dark way, than that. He owed/owes a debt, not a money debt, a personal debt for what he did, for the lack of accountability and from people who protected him. He owed them blood, they know their cash cow died, in that instant. His life has just gotten darker and he will have to atone for it. His debt can no longer be paid There will be consequences.
