The Russian Air Force (VKS) in the invasion of Ukraine, from 2021 to the present, has presented a complex picture of both numerical and qualitative advantages, alongside significant challenges and unexpected limitations. Initial Phase (Early 2022): * Overwhelming numerical and qualitative superiority: At the outset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia possessed a significantly larger and more advanced air force compared to Ukraine's. This included modern aircraft like Su-30s, Su-34s, and Su-35s, along with sophisticated electronic warfare (EW) equipment and Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS). * Failure to achieve air superiority: Despite its advantages, the VKS largely failed to establish air superiority over Ukraine in the initial days and weeks of the war. This was a critical factor in Russia's inability to achieve its initial strategic objectives, particularly the capture of Kyiv. * Reasons for the initial failure: * Strong Ukrainian Air Defenses: Ukraine's robust and adaptable air defense network, comprising S-300s, SA-11s, SA-8s, anti-aircraft guns, and thousands of MANPADS (Man-Portable Air-Defense Systems), proved far more effective than anticipated. Ukrainian forces also employed deceptive tactics, using dummy batteries and dispersed deployments. * Lack of SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) and EW capabilities: The VKS struggled to effectively neutralize Ukrainian air defenses. Reports suggest that Russian SEAD missions were often poorly coordinated and sometimes even jammed their own forces. * Outdated tactics and poor pilot training: Some analyses point to rigid command and control structures, insufficient pilot training, and a lack of timely intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) as contributing factors. * Small jet formations: The VKS often operated in small formations, typically one to six aircraft, rather than large-scale, coordinated attacks, limiting their impact. * Rapid delivery of Western air defense systems: The swift provision of FIM-92 Stingers and other anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine by the US and its allies significantly bolstered Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Evolving Air Warfare (Mid-2022 to Present): * Shift in tactics: As the war progressed, the VKS adapted its tactics. Unable to gain full air superiority, Russian aircraft began operating more cautiously, often launching munitions from beyond the range of Ukrainian air defenses. * Increased reliance on glide bombs and drones: Russia has increasingly relied on precision-guided glide bombs (e.g., FABs with glide kits) launched from standoff distances, which have proven highly destructive on the front lines.
