Do you know why the Lord Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God”? Matthew 19:24 (KJV) If you understand the reminder behind this saying, you may better understand the heart that the Lord Jesus wants us to see. Some people explain that in ancient city walls there was a very small gate called “the eye of the needle.” This gate was so narrow that a camel could not pass through while standing tall. The only way was this: the camel had to unload the goods it was carrying, kneel down, and slowly, humbly crawl through. Jesus was not saying that rich people cannot enter the kingdom of God. Rather, it is because people easily depend on what they possess more than they depend on God. Fame and gain can lead you away from God. Pride can make you resist God and refuse to obey Him. Your ability can make you always trust in yourself. Your status can make it easy for you to exalt yourself and testify of yourself. In short, many things can hinder you from worshiping God. If a person cannot let go of these things, it will be very hard for them to truly come before God with humility. A person must learn to let go. Let go of your pride. Let go of your own dependence. Let go of the things that occupy your heart more than God does. So this word is not only for rich people. It is also for everyone who is unwilling to let go of themselves. The real question today is: What is weighing you down? What is occupying your heart? What makes you know God’s word clearly, yet still refuse to obey? Maybe it is not money. Maybe it is a person. Maybe it is a relationship. Maybe it is your plan, your pride, your desire, or the arrogance you have never been willing to let go of. God’s door is open. But if a person wants to enter God’s will, they cannot keep holding on to the world. Because only the humble can truly come before God.
