@itvnews: Ruth Perry was a head teacher who she took her own life after an Ofsted inspection in 2023. After her death, Ofsted carried out a consultation and developed a new inspection framework to improve headteacher wellbeing. Since the new system has come into place, ITV News has been contacted by 12 head teachers who all say the new framework has failed to address wellbeing concerns. One head teacher, speaking anonymously, described a recent inspection as “the worst two days of my entire career”, and said he had experienced suicidal thoughts. In a statement, Chief Inspector Sir Martyn Oliver said: “I am very sorry to hear that these head teachers feel the way they do. Our new framework has been designed with head teachers’ wellbeing firmly in mind. However, I cannot remove all the pressure from the inspection process. Our priority is always the education and welfare of children. That means holding schools to account and, sometimes, conveying difficult messages where standards are not high enough.” A Department for Education spokesperson said: “Ofsted’s new report cards give parents and teachers a clearer, more transparent picture of what’s working and where change is needed. “We’re continuing to work closely with Ofsted and school leaders to make sure inspections are collaborative, constructive and fair.” #schools #education #teaching

How many children consider taking their own lives because of the state of the education system?

Honestly maybe a teaching job with this amount of pressure just isn’t worth it. I’m also considering quitting.

I don’t understand all this. These are public sector jobs which are being judged by an independent body on the standard of their teaching. If we didn’t have Ofsted how would we know how schools are performing?

It’s just the wrong focus. Everything is on data, results, exams etc. the focus should be on happiness, fulfilment, behaviour.

my secondary school was put under the management of a trust when I was year 8 after a bad ofsted inspection, the headteacher that was popular among students and staff was sacked and the school went tremendously downhill with both teachers and students complaining frequently about the new management, a year after I finished my GCSEs and left theres onlt two teachers left there that were employed before the school was taken over

For everyone who’s not a teacher who doesn’t understand, it’s how inconsistent and power mad certain inspectors are. The outcome of an inspection is often based on whether you get a ‘nice’ inspector rather than fairness. Too many inconsistencies

Ofsted take themselves way too seriously. It’s school FFS. They’re kids. As long as the children are safe, protected, well looked after and learning, what’s the problem?

I had an interview recently for an inspector role and I can vouch that Ofsted are taking how they approach inspections seriously. We need inspections to ensure standards remain high and schools are held accountable. Any appraisal is uncomfortable whatever one's role, but Ofsted can't do away with difficult conversations entirely. Maybe the schools need somebody above the head for pastoral support during inspections but Ofsted needs to uphold standards. And no, I didn't get the job in case you think I AM biased but I was impressed by the improvements and the big listen outcomes and strive to do better.

Some of the best education systems in the world don’t have these high stake inspections. We should move to a local peer driven, more regular and collaborative process.

As a parent, we need to know what schools are like, but only if it really gives us choice.. If the schools and the head teaches, i'm not getting the support they need. Then why are we judging them.. There's a lot to unpack here. It's not just the writing, which we do need. It's the ability to change that the school needs.. And if they are not empowered, why give them the information🤔
