Drawing a sword against another house now meant drawing a sword against the crown itself. This was an enormous change in Westerosi history because before him small wars and blood feuds never truly ended. He was also extremely intelligent with religion because even though he was a foreign king from Valyria he did not try to crush the Faith of the Seven, instead he legitimized himself in the eyes of the people by building seven towers into the walls of Kings Landing and being blessed by the High Septon. He also did not interfere heavily with the laws and cultures of the different regions, the North kept its traditions, the Vale kept its own legal customs, and most regions except Dorne submitted far more easily because Aegon did not try to force everyone into the same mold. He even reformed taxes because before the conquest every kingdom had its own system, but Aegon centralized taxation and created a constant source of income for the crown so the realm could function through real economics instead of only war spoils. One of his most important reforms was creating the Hand of the King system because for the first time in Westerosi history there was an official second man ruling the realm beside the king, and this was critical for the continuity of the state. The small council system also became established during his reign with positions like Master of Coin and Master of Laws, turning the government into an actual institution instead of one man ruling everything alone. He also did not remain inside the castle all the time, he constantly traveled across the realm, visited lords, and appeared before the people because he understood that people are less likely to rebel against a king whose face they know, so even after the conquest he spent years moving across Westeros almost like a ruler on campaign. In war he did not rely only on Balerion either, he used armies carefully, formed alliances, used fear when necessary, but avoided pointless slaughter because he understood that a realm built only on terror would never last forever.
