@advocaapp: Healthcare is inherently risky and being admitted to hospital is one of the riskiest components. This is what you can do to keep yourself or your family safe if you are admitted to hospital. You can use Martha’s rule if you are concerned about your own deterioration or the deterioration of a loved one. It is a mandatory patient safety standard in England and there will be a dedicated number for you to call. It is being expanded across more services and can be reliably enacted in acute care settings. Follow me to learn more about doctors, healthcare, hospitals, and advocating for yourself when you’re interacting with the system.
used Martha's Rule when my elderly mum was in hospital and they were fantastic. they not only reviewed my mum's care, they looked after the rest of us and gave us information and advice when we couldn't get answers from the medical team. Please make use of the service so that we don't lose it

Best advice is don’t get sick. The system is broken.

If you have an elderly relative in hospital, put a bottle of squash and a photo of a grandchild/great niece/nephew on their side table. If they have an interest, even if not currently interested, get them a fancy magazine about it. Encourage them to wear their own pyjamas. Having these things on their side table says to everyone, this person is a real vibrant person who has people who care and are watching. I used to be a ward based OT.

I requested a Martha's Rule review for my dad when he was i hospital last year - the nurses and the dr on the ward claimed to not know anything about it, despite a poster displayed above the nurses station!

Good tips - is be with your relatives, waiting in A&E, don't go home . Yes I know it's exhausting but putting a shift for your relative. I do it every time for my daughter. Hello.

My friend used this for her husband and they reviewed him and he needed urgent surgery and yesterday he was discharged from hospital after 3 months. It works!

Martha’s rule……doesn’t work in most hospitals. I’ve used it, never got a review. We were very very very failed.

There really needs to be something similar for people who have serious disabilities or lifelong illnesses being cared for in the community.
