Yes, my mom loc’ed my hair at three years old in the early 2000s in most of my peers growing up in America had relaxed hair. A lot of people associated my locs with my Caribbean heritage (which was true), but when I actually lived in St. Lucia, my siblings and I could not attend the school. They said we would have to cover our hair because they did not want people to think Rastafarians were attending the school. It’s interesting to think that there are more protections for black hair in America than in predominantly black countries.

long hair is viewed as unprofessional in schools and alot of Christians here believe it's a sin for men to have long hair. alot of ppl won't have locs cause it's not desirable

the minute your hair grows too long in a Jamaican community in the Diaspora "yuh a tun rasta?" is said. there's a very different relationship that jamaicans of a certain generation have with Rastafarianism because of colonialism

There are no laws banning locs. Please correct that. In certain schools and workplaces you cannot have locs, which is the correct statement.

People are so obtuse in these comments. We know that locs aren’t just apart of Jamaican culture. However there was a huge movement that spawned out of Jamaica called the Rastafarian movement and having locs was apart of their spiritual practices and funnily enough they were the original vegans. Their locs were tied to their connections with their African ancestors. There is also a global hatred of locs across the world. She is specifically talking about how in Jamaica in particular this is a phenomenon even though Rastafarianism bore out of Jamaica.

I'm Jamaican, raised in America when I went to Jamaica my family was so unhappy with my hair. I'll never forget my aunt asked why I wear my hair this way I said because it's how God intended she said noooo God wouldn't want that🤯😂 that was years ago. She's actually natural now, I like to think it's because of my influence.
