To think.. my parents came from Germany in 61. They had to be married. Got an immediate physical. Were even checked if they had diseases or fleas on their body. Got their passport stamped and welcome to Canada. No benefit office nothing my mom worked for $.35 and my dad worked for $.85. And shared a house with two other couples for three years until they were able to save money for a mortgage on a house. They even tried to learn English for 2 weeks on the ship over. Lol They even brought a bag of salt with them incase Canada didn’t have it. lol.
