Magnetic Fuel Tank Indicators (MMIs) – General Information What are MMIs? Magnetic Fuel Tank Indicators, also known as Manual Magnetic Indicators (MMIs), are mechanical devices used to manually measure the fuel level in aircraft fuel tanks. They operate without electrical power and provide a direct physical indication of the fuel quantity. Why are MMIs used? MMIs are used as a backup method to measure fuel quantity when the electronic Fuel Quantity Indicating System (FQIS) is inoperative or unavailable. They offer a reliable and accurate alternative to assess the actual fuel remaining on board, especially during troubleshooting or maintenance tasks. When do we use MMIs? •	When the fuel quantity indicating system fails or provides unreliable data •	During specific maintenance checks or inspections •	As part of troubleshooting procedures •	In some cases, during fuel transfer or refueling verification Where are MMIs located? MMIs are installed directly into the fuel tanks and are positioned to allow accurate level readings: •	Center Tank: Typically 1 MMI •	Wing Tanks: Typically 5 MMIs per wing (e.g., labeled R-1 to R-5) How do MMIs work? The MMI consists of a magnetically coupled float system. The float inside the tank rises and falls with the fuel level. When you pull the indicator rod from the outside, the magnet aligns with the internal float, and the rod shows the fuel level corresponding to the tank’s bottom skin. The measurement is then recorded and used with fuel density and aircraft attitude (pitch/roll) to determine the actual fuel quantity.
