This movie was interesting when I was a little boy; I remember even back then, when I was maybe twelve, loving this scene, and I still do. Rented it on Prime just to see this scene and share it. Rewatched it tonight for New Years Eve. What’s most interesting is he knows the difference, and even after reviewing this concept from a point of experience…he still chose the woman he was instinctually hot for, over a good woman, because she was safe, and good, and as successful and well off as he was, he didn’t need that. He needed to feel wanted, visceral, erotic, sexy—the animalistic urge to look at her at want her every single time he saw her. He chose that woman, and he married her, and when they had hard times they broke up, they divorced, but—every single time they saw each other, they couldn’t keep their hands off each other, like two magnets pulling each other together, and they’d remarry. It was one of the most interesting movies about a truth in a relationship, and why many many marriages fail, because they settle for safe; Love can get you so far, convenience and equally yoked, financial stability, mental stability, intellectual balance, and all that can equate to marriage in a “we make sense” kinda way, but in the end…we all want excitement. We all want inspiration; To be able to look at our partner years after being with them, and say I still want them. On dating apps, I have down-graded myself to the most basic concept for true longevity, asking something far fetched, like “Can I see myself going down on this person everyday for the rest of my life, even when maybe sometimes we are angry?” Can I see lustfilled furious eyes of locked-in passion with a soul-surrender contentment? Can I see having in-depth conversations with this person long past our ability to do the wild sexual things? And that…takes a “they should look sexy to me up front,” “I should be able to perceive them as intelligent” “they should have a spirit like…fucking Velma.” Hot, wild, smart, and cool. He found his in this movie, and overcame a woman of love and convenience knowing he would’ve sold himself short on the fantasy she could make him happy, realizing she never would…when he saw and felt hot again. A mirror of himself. And for that he married, and was happy even when he was miserable, he was happy, because she was the woman he couldn’t not adore and want to carnally just devour everytime he saw her, and in that…he found a mutual energy balance of love. Very Siddhartha-esque taking the path less traveled to find the one enlightenment through the one he knew he wanted.
