I was a Gold Medalist in my undergrad in India. Then I moved to the U.S., and suddenly, nothing was easy anymore. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t at the top of the class. I’d always been the type-A student. Top of my class in middle school, high school, and college. Assignments that took 30 minutes in India, took me 6 hours. I spent most nights sitting in the hallway next to a whiteboard, scribbling through probability and statistics, trying to keep up. At Columbia University, I realized I wasn’t just competing with classmates. I was competing with a different way of thinking. - No bell curve to save you. - Open-book exams, so you had to actually understand the concepts. - Less theory, more real-world application. - Professors who loved what they taught. - And classrooms filled with actual discussions, not just lectures. At the end of my first semester, I had a 3.75 GPA. which wasn’t bad but, for someone who had always been at the top? It felt like a wake-up call. The real problem wasn’t me. It was how I had been trained to learn. The Indian education system doesn’t push students to think critically. It rewards memorization, not understanding. And when you grow up that way, transitioning to a system that values curiosity, discussion, and application becomes a struggle. Grad school didn’t just challenge me academically. It forced me to unlearn years of habits. Not every subject was exciting. But for the first time, I had to truly earn my knowledge. And that’s why we need change in education. Because real learning isn’t about how much you can memorize. It’s about how well you can think.
