7th-century BCE writers like Sappho and Alcman were the first to assign explicit coloring to her, using the word xanthē, which translates to fair, golden, or reddish-blonde hair. Other classical poems describe her with gleaming blue or sparkling eyes. Because these traits were incredibly rare in the Mediterranean, the Greeks associated them with divine perfection and high aesthetic value.
