@minzettilein: you blindly assume the definition of a criminal is fixed, objective, and immune to change. history suggests otherwise. laws are created, amended, expanded, and interpreted by governments over time and entirely new offenses are introduced every year. conduct that is legal today may become restricted tomorrow. if private communications are routinely scanned by default, the system does not distinguish between criminals and ordinary citizens. it examines everyone’s messages first and determines suspicion afterward. once the technical infrastructure for mass scanning exists, it can be repurposed or expanded beyond its original justification. a system introduced to detect one type of content can later be used to search for others, enforce new laws, identify political dissidents, monitor journalists, pressure whistleblowers, map social networks or collect vast amounts of personal information. the capabilities may grow gradually through new legislation, policy changes or shifting definitions of what should be monitored. normalize a mechanism that gives authorities the ability to inspect everyone’s private conversations whenever the legal or political landscape changes? privacy is not a privilege reserved for criminals; it is a safeguard that limits the concentration of power. if yesterday’s freedom can become tomorrow’s offense, who decides when you’ve crossed the line? #politics #chatcontrol #pepememe #eu #law
