@moreperfectunion: Patty Murray (D-WA) questions Dr. Molly Dahl, the Chief of Long-Term Analysis at the Congressional Budget Office on the effective Social Security tax rate facing Americans at different salary brackets. Americans making $184,000 or less pay 12.4%, millionaires only pay 2.2%, while billionaires like Donald Trump or Elon Musk effectively pay 0.0002%
Why not 2.2% on 184K and 12.4% anything above that?

This is a dumb comparison. For social security, the benefit it capped, if someone earns a million and is paying in to social security on their entire income, the benefit payout at retirement would also go up.

Why are we paying more in taxes than millionaires and billionaires? Raise their tax rate back up to what it was before Reagan became president. This is f”cking ridiculous!

The biggest thing people overlook is millionaires and billionaires a lot of the time have unrealized gains they leverage for loans and pay no taxes at all. Unrealized gains should be taxed when leveraged for loans as real collateral.

This is madness. Every dollar earned should be subject to the same rate…12.4%. We’ve been screaming this forever.

Why are we comparing percentages? Its not based on wealth. There's an income cap. Everyone pays 6.2% on $184.5k (12.4 when combined with employer match). This isnt rocket science. She's intentionally using percentages to conflate the matter when its very straight forward.
Go ahead, make CEOs pay a higher percent so they collect more when they reach retirement age.

It's all rigged for capitalism to work. Without poverty, you no longer have rich people. And rich people will never allow those in poverty to escape.

We use percentages to be fair, how is it fair to tax lower income earners a thousand percentage points more than the billionaires who can afford it without struggling?

simple fix for congress, eliminate the $184,000 cap. Then millionaires would be paying the same as everyone else. They could do it with a vote before lunch time tomorrow.

Yup everyone should pay the same percentage no matter how much you make!! This is the only fair way!! We all pay 3% and nobody can say I pay more or less!!

Glad this disparity is at least being acknowledged and addressed. Hope this gets more attention. This country needs a massive overhaul.
