This is a classic example of presentism. These artifacts show that Greeks knew, depicted, and interacted with people from Africa, which no serious historian disputes. But a handful of artifacts don’t prove that Ancient Greece reflected our modern concept of diversity or that our understanding of Ancient Greece has been “whitewashed.” Ancient Greece wasn’t a modern multicultural nation-state; it consisted of hundreds of independent city-states over many centuries, each with different populations and varying degrees of contact with foreigners. Historical evidence should be interpreted in its own historical context, not through modern concepts of race, diversity, and representation. As for The Odyssey, it appears that Nolan is making a modern cinematic adaptation rather than a historically grounded reconstruction of the ancient Greek world. That’s a perfectly valid artistic choice. If people enjoy it, that’s great. But if others prefer adaptations that stay closer to the historical and cultural context of ancient Greece, that’s equally valid, especially because ancient Greek mythology remains an important part of Greece’s cultural heritage. We don’t have to pretend the film is a historical reconstruction if that doesn’t appear to be its aim.

Bronze Age Greece (the time period the Odyssey is set in) had a flourishing trade and political connections to nearby Mediterranean countries, such as Egypt and Nubia. Many artworks, such as the vases you show or even frescos, show dark-skinned figures with important minoan and aegean kings and lords. The mythical King Mennonite of Aethiopia was even said to have come to Troy’s aid during the Trojan War. While intermarriage is possible given the favourable circumstances, it is certainly not a phenomenon on a large enough scale to have made an impact - minoan and mycenaean skeletons show no measurable sub-saharan DNA. All those depictions are of FOREIGN emissaries and traders, despite friendly diplomatic relations, in no way would those people have been considered GREEK, much less rulers of GREEK KINGDOMS.

I don’t think that any logical person think that Ancient Greek haven’t seen a black person to be honest! Even in Odyssey mentioned that because of the wing Odysseas reached Africa, meaning people were aware of this continent and most likely people of color. They even called them Aithiopes (literal translation burned face ones). And as you showed on your video there are many pottery with these representations in Ancient Greece. Because of this it’s almost impossible specific people (all nobles) to be people of color in Ancient Greece, since they had very specific views about what noble should look like

Of course they were. And all of them were slaves. Ancient Greek society never accepted foreigners as equal. For the Ancient Greeks foreigners were barbarians and uncivilised. Only later during the Hellenistic period foreigners who were speaking Greek and studied Greek philosophy, math etc were accepted as equal

Yeah they were but they didn’t have the social status to be at Helens place . The Ancient Greeks were very territorial and patriotic not only about their country as a whole but with their city-states and very racist to other city-states . They had close ties with Egyptians tho so I could see a person of color having some status but again not this much . Also the people u quoted are Roman so we are speaking of a difrent time period , the Roman Greek communications started at 3rd century bC the Trojan war was way before that , since from the myth the romans originated from that war (with their founding father trojan Aneas ). I am not opposed to her playing Helen tho because the story if fictional and the best actress should play her not the most accurate historically, because then neither Tom holland fits his role .
