@iamflorianx: American friendliness is a whole different level. 🤯 What feels like a normal Tuesday to an American feels like a complete glitch in the matrix to a European. 🇺🇸🇪🇺 To my non-Americans: What’s the craziest experience you’ve had with American friendliness? And to my Americans: Do you even realize you’re changing someone's entire day by just being you? 👇 Drop your stories below! #cultureshock #lifeintheusa #americanstyle #culturaldifferences #usavseuropa

When I was in Paris, I went downstairs to use the bathroom and there were four of us girls standing in the very small hallway area. I kept looking at them because typically in America this would be the time for at least a smile acknowledgment, If not, a little chitchat. Everybody was looking at their shoes, it was so awkward to me, but I also recognized that this is not my country and they clearly were not open to that. I realized how much I enjoy random waiting in line conversations.

Absolutely was raised that you never know how much a brief moment of kindness can change someone’s day. Kindness can save lives and feed the soul all at the same time

I’m an American who lived in Europe for 14 years. Best thing I heard was that they think we have ‘golden retriever energy.’ I take that as a compliment since everyone likes golden retrievers. I’m also a strong extrovert - my sister says I can start up a conversation with dead people or trees.

I just want to mention, we’re good at this because it’s literally part of our culture! But I can’t tell you the joy I feel, when I just tell a random person they have a lovely shirt or I like their shoes! It makes their day & they light up! Everybody deserves a compliment :)

When you go back home smile at everybody if they smile back at you, you know they’ve been to America then you can start up a conversation. Hey did you go to USA fifa and when they say Yep and I’m still carrying that smile. Just keep spreading the joy it’s contagious set a trend. You can change the place where you live. You just have to be consistent.

It’s a nice way to not feel alone in a very isolating world. A small compliment or friendly nod can turn someone’s day around. Kindness doesn’t cost anything.

As a native NY'er, I've directed visitors to restaurants, walked them to sights in Central Park, shared my dessert at restaurants and made countless theater recommendations. We may move fast but we can always make time!

Im an American live in Austria. I saw tourists looking troubled finding where they wanted to go. I went up to them asking them if they needed help. They seemed very hesitant to being talked to. But I they got the instructions. I’m learning people aren’t used to casual assistance.

I was in South Africa in 2003. At a market in a tourist area most of the customers were German or Dutch tourists and he cashier line was long, but it was orderly and no one spoke. The cashier was an African lady and when it was my turn, I just did what we always do at markets in the US…I smiled and said “Good morning. Wow, it’s really busy in here!” She smiled and giggled, then quickly covered her mouth. Her manager noticed and came over. “Sally? Is anything wrong?“ “No,” she said, “he was so nice to me.”

I think it’s space. We have plenty of space, we don’t need to guard it. In other countries - unless you’re very remote - you want your privacy. Maybe also why Americans think New Yorkers aren’t nice. (NY’ers are very nice and helpful but just in a rush usually.)

It’s something I find fascinating. It’s the culture that developed because so much of the population do not share the culture language or background. We developed a physical language of welcoming

American introvert here. Not friendly. But I did help two very bewildered non-English speaking tourists lost deep in Brooklyn yesterday find their way back to Central Park. And I made sure to say good bye across a crowded subway car when I got off at 14th Street.

My absolute favorite thing in the world is seeing someone smile after getting a compliment. It’s one of my favorite parts of American culture. Please know that we mean all the compliments we give, our niceness isn’t fake!
