@jamesgetspolitical: There’s been a lot of talk about AOC running for president in 2028 and I’m… not quite sold on it. #leftist #education #politics #news #usa

This shouldn’t be a hot take. Regardless of who you support, you should be critical of EVERY candidate. Look at their voting history, their public statements, and how often they actually stand behind their campaign promises.

I don’t think we’ll ever get a perfect candidate. Obviously, she’s not perfect. But when I hear about Newsom, Harris, etc., I’ll pick her every time. Unless I hear a better name (with a half decent chance of winning the primary), then I’ll consider someone else. For now, she’s my pick.

People responding by focusing more on finding the “right person” are missing the greater point hidden in this his opinion, which is about having a more circumspect conversation about the system of presidential election.

So we don’t support any campaign run then? This sounds like the presidency itself and not AOC.

we don't have that (a leftist congressional vanguard) because we don't have that power (a leftist voting bloc). we need to interrogate that and question how many of us there actually are, and what our goals need to be accordingly (narrative shifting, personal political advocacy in our social spheres, community organizing with our neighbors). we need to grow before we ever have the ego to claim that democracy needs to obey us and even the most left politicians need to move farther left

I think at the very least DSA should stay out of endorsing for president and focus on legislation and congress.

I think AOC should run for senate in 2028. Like she can run for president eventually, but I don’t think that 2028 is the right time.

what would we have done when Bernie...? would we have not wanted Bernie to win in 2016 or 2020? wouldn't we disavow Bernie's bad actions and push further left policies/politics? I also think I would take my chances on president AOC, as opposed to Rep 1/435 AOC who needs to compromise on more.

I think we have to- I’m not gonna argue that she is perfect or honestly that she is even beyond “good”. But. If we don’t get a progressive in the White House in 2028, it might just be over. I think in our lifetime she is the most progressive candidate who actually could win, and waiting for a truly exceptional progressive candidate might just be too long to wait, given the track record of these conservative monsters eroding the rights of our brothers and sisters every day for the last decade.

If a popular leftist (or even centrist progressive for that matter) doesn’t get into the executive branch, then what good is Congress when facing the same style or right wing president and right wing appointed judges who control everything like they do now? AOC could at least appoint Supreme Court justices if she became president. What’s the plan beyond losing a hard fight in Congress?

I think what is difficult is their isn’t a progressive foreign policy apparatus in place. There’s no progressive think tanks full of smart political analysts bc for almost a century our foreign policy has been dictated by capitalists. We need to rebuild our foreign relations and that’s an insane task to put on one person, especially bc Mossad has agents all over the country, as does Russia, who will kill and commit acts of terror under a progressive president aided by CIA who doesn’t agree with her. She would receive relentless bad press from both sides and this is why no one has attempted to change anything in how we act globally. Standing up to the military industrial complex is picking a fight with ppl who use mercenaries to kill ppl overseas. She would have to come in with a really strong plan, but if she publicly expressed that plan she will be assassinated if she’s elected.

Sick rant I guess but what do you propose we do for 2026 and 2028? I agree we have to set up strong local left politicians but we still have to vote in 2028

She is one of the most popular politicians. I'd vote for her over most of them. I agree with her policies far more than Harris.

she could use the presidency to do court reform and voting reforms that will long term help the left gain more power. gerrymandering and the courts are huge obstacles that she could work with moderates to make better
