What do we do if we have hurt feelings about how often we talk when they live far away

My daughter gave me an “I am sorry that happened to you”. After I texted her a picture of 2nd grade. Those were the days.

My favorite comment that I heard at a teacher’s conference that I use when being a good listener with others is, “Do you want me to comment or listen?”.

You are spot on. My adult daughters tell me their troubles. They don’t want advice. Sometimes just a place to park those big feelings

I’m good if they don’t tell me all their problems. You know why I didn’t tell my own parents all of my problems? Because they had enough problems of their own to stress over and I was an adult.

I have this type of mature relationship with my 19 year-old daughter. But with my 22 year-old son he’d constantly come to me ruminating over every little problem and asking for my advice. I could never win. He’d ask for advice and when I gave it to him he’d say he “doesn’t need a lecture thanks.” If I didn’t give any advice, I didn’t care about him. He’d always do the complete opposite anyway then come to me when it backfired expecting me to fix his problem. This went round and round in circles for years, I always felt thoroughly drained and exhausted. One day we had yet another argument, he suddenly left and hasn’t spoken to me for over a year. I wish I’d held strong and not given in to his constant neediness and abuse but it was literally impossible not to.
