@iamrobinskies: The best way to teach kids to avoid substances is to tell them to avoid them and live that out yourself. Responsible consumption and relative sobriety paired with active parenting is the best bet we have to save lives.
'I know this to be true because of my own personal experience'. Completely lost me there

As someone who HAS a major substance use disorder, I couldnt agree more. My dad showed me the movie animal house at age 12 and that's all I aspired twords until I was 27.

This is incredibly simplistic and disregarding a ton of other factors that contribute to substance use disorder.

I was raised to not do drugs and my parents were a great example of being hypocritical about it. I learned how to NOT do drugs by seeing how it ruined people.

The people disagreeing with you are too lazy to be a proper parent and lack discipline in their life. Obviously there are other factors that go into substance use disorders but IT STARTS AT HOME. Set the example, set the standard, create the values and a strong FOUNDATION

Ur first bad take my friend. Grew up in a house where drugs and drinking were the ultimate taboo but when I heard lil Wayne talking about it as a kid it made me wanna try it. It’s pop culture that’s created the problem

you are so correct. Both of my grandfathers are alcoholics. I had numerous aunts and uncles that had addiction issues. Growing up my mother talk to me about alcoholism and addiction. So that I would learn from the mistakes of the people around me.

Idk about Canada, but here in the US a lot of our elementary and middle schools have this program called DARE which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Usually the program will be taught by an active police officer and we’ll have real testimonies from real parents who lost their children to drug abuse. And the course usually lasts about a few months and from experience we had to right letters to our parents and other adults that we’d never do drugs.

The more addictions to different substances I’ve had, the more I believe weed is a gateway drug for young people. I had no care or regard for my health, so after weed I just escalated and escalated until I was a coke addict. I’m getting sober from alcohol now after being sober from Coke for a year. I never want my child to experience what I have and do what I’ve done.
