Goodness of fit is a non parametric procedure done to determine if a specific distribution matches a target distribution. It can also be done to test normality in samples….. oh wait, wrong goodness of fit..

It also depends on direct admit vs ad com admit. Ex - for direct admit it is really just your fit with the advisor who can direct admit you, as opposed to when a whole ad com is reviewing it will be the whole committee reviewing many people and a combo of the fit with the advisor, the program, cohort etc

This has always been a difficult concept to explain to good undergrads. I had an amazing UG student who was stunned when I told her that good programs are going to choose her only if she can advance the professor’s research program with the least amount of effort from the professor. She could have a 4.0, great GRE scores, and experience doing research, but if her interests don’t align with the professor, she might not be chosen. She was also hung up on prestige programs from Ivy League schools. Similarly, I told her it’s better for her to go to a state school in the Midwest and work with the expert in the field, rather than a name brand school where she doesn’t match up with any professor.

I definitely think they get that confusion from undergrad admissions! For college applicants goodness of fit means personality and preference in relation to the school they’re applying to

do you have any ideas for good internships for an undergrad student who wants to become a sports psychologist in the future?

If my past research is in clinical psych but in an area of clinical psychology not entirely related to my current research interests am I likely to struggle getting accepted into labs aligned with my interests? Do most people’s interests for future graduate work align quite well with the experience they were able to get in undergrad?

How do you find what kind of applicants the program is looking for?
