![I still remember my second night in America. I walked home - for the first time - at 4 AM without any sense of fear. Something that I either couldn’t do in India because my college had curfew for women or I was just scared to step out late. In India, I’d be scared even to board a bus with mostly men - and have been at the receiving end of a lot of “eve teasing” and catcalling. But this is just my experience. Let’s look at some data. In 2023, Georgetown University did a study on women’s inclusion, justice and security. India ranked 128th on the list out of 177 countries overall. U.S. was not at the top, but it ranked 37th. What’s interesting is: in this index, Women’s perception of communtiy safety has gotten worse both in India and U.S. - though U.S. is still better. In a 2019 national survey of 100,000 Indian women by the Neta App, 42% of women said they feel “unsafe” or “very unsafe” in their local environment. And Delhi keeps coming up on top of the unsafe list of cities. There’s actually not a ton of surveys on women who moved from India to U.S. But the limited ones def seem to point to this: women feel that their safety improved when they migrated out of India. I’ve firsthand seen the difference in safety when I am in India vs U.S. There are other problems in the U.S., but overall, safety seems to be a concern for women moving abroad - and India still has a long way to go.
