The honest after-tax savings ladder, starting at 33 from zero (5% real returns): 10-15% gets you done at 76-84, 25% around 65, 30% around 61, 40% around 55, 50% around 50. The formula is income-agnostic, but the difficulty isn't. The W-2 path to your 50s: no consumer debt, boring housing and cars, 25-40% into assets, shelters filled yearly, a taxable bridge before 59½, maybe one or two rentals. Returns aren't guaranteed, sequence risk is real, and the right rate depends on your household. The next raise is where the choice gets made.
