I wish we all could reframe these questions. “Why didn’t you…” puts the blame on the victim. Maybe something like, “How did you escape this abuse?” This is victim blaming, though I don’t think people actually intend this. I’m so sorry you endured this.

my mom would beat the hell out of us, sometimes naked, dhs did come, she told us if we told them the truth they'd take us and give us to white people who would treat us worse . . . .

I was a little girl and watched my mom getting beaten too plus we were abused also in the 1960s yes, we did think it was a normal thing with our family so sad

I thought my family was completely normal. I didn’t realize until I was an adult and saw other healthier families. Not that they didn’t have stuff, they all did, but I realized what I experienced wasn’t normal. I realized love was very different than what I had experienced.

People don’t understand how having abusive parents teaches you that you have no power. Calling the police? That wouldn’t even enter your mind. Your whole life your parent has told you they are right. As a child, you will naturally believe them. I was also homeschooled k-12 and didn’t know I was abused until I was an adult. I NEVER questioned my parents.

my older brother told my dad “we learned at school you can’t hit us and we can call the police” to which my dad responded “the cops will take about 5-7 minutes to get here, i can do a lot to you in that timeframe, im going to jail anyway.”
