With no degree, you're a tech. Nothing wrong with being a tech, but calling a tech an engineer is like calling a nurse a doctor.

As an engineer, it’s exhausting to hear people use the title “engineer” after I worked and went to school full time together to get my EE. Techs are very important and have their role, but abusing the term I’m not for.

A technician does maintenance and engineer is legally responsible for a design and if it fails and kills people he will probably not be an engineer anymore like a civil engineer with a pe license and a 20 year technician have very different levels of responsibility for the work they do and what they are required to know

If you're not a licensed engineer then your not one. legally pretty simple. I legally cannot call myself an architect until I get licensed. works the same for all professions

In many countries, especially EU you need the degree to hold the title of engineer, like doctors, and to be able to sign your projects, without that you’re basically a nobody

Here in Belgium engineer means you’ve studied bio, civil or industrial engineering with various majors, 5 year studies, and it’s a protected title (ir. or ing). You can work for 30 years, but without the degree you would still not be an engineer.

Okay but here in Australia, engineers need to be certified by a governmental organisation and have our qualifications tested. A software engineer isn’t legally an engineer here.

I think it’s just a way to gatekeep. I was an aircraft mechanic, I moved into being a systems engineer, Sr. Engineer and now principal level engineer and someone fresh out of college would still say I’m not a “engineer“. When in reality we just chose different paths to be here and it was a different type of hard. It took 12 years to start from where most college graduates do after 4. Both pathways are valid.

you need to be careful using job title of engineer if you are not licensed. Typically no license is a designer or tech.

Most companies hiring for an engineering role are looking for an ABET accredited degree. While most engineering degrees are ABET accredited, there are some that are not, and there are some eng tech degrees that are four years and accredited as well. I believe if you have an engineering job that it makes you an engineer
