That's exactly why we all hate the finale of Game of Thrones. The rules of the universe were that if you played the game right, you would stay on top. But suddenly, beloved characters would make mistakes, play the game wrong, and not face the dire consequences we had learned to expect before. That meant nothing had weight anymore. Dany didn't die because she wasn't suited for playing the game, but because of circunstances of her genes, totally outside of her control. And the same happened to most characters: neither the sad or happy endings were earned.

Grimdark is explicitly a genre that does the opposite. For specific reason and specific impact. But subversion is far different than breaking rules. Would be curious if you have ever read or watched much of it.
